#39: Matte Lips

How is everyone? We have now officially entered the Autumn season and everyone is returning to his/her routine. Some of us are returning to work, and many of you are facing a major change in your lives as you are about to leave your homes to study abroad at Universities, where new fascinating experiences are expecting you so I want to wish you all good luck to your new beginnings.

This season will be a major change for me too, as every Autumn for 7 consecutive years I would travel back to my flat in the UK. However, from this year onwards, things are changing as I have moved permanently to Cyprus. Nonetheless, I am excited for what is about to come and let’s not forget that in less than 3 weeks, Milan Fashion Week is happening and I can’t wait!

Today’s topic is Matte Lips; the new trend. What I like with matte lipsticks and glosses is that they stay longer, meaning that you do need to top up every now and then and you don’t have to worry when you eat or drink as your lipstick will remain. Cool right? As a lipstick addict, I couldn’t but try many and different kinds of matte lipsticks and glosses and today I will introduce you to my top picks.

Before I continue on introducing the products I love, there are some STEPS TO FOLLOW for obtaining the perfect matte lips.

Always moisturise your lips as matte lipsticks can be very dehydrating and reveal all imperfections of dry lips.
Apply some powder on your lips; this will help the lipstick to stay even longer.
Before applying your lipstick or gloss, define your lips with a lip pencil close to the shade of your lipstick and then fill your lips with the pencil.
Apply your lipstick or gloss with a brush, making sure you are within the lines you defined.
If you’re applying a matte gloss then allow for the gloss to dry in order to change from glossy to matte.
Contour your lips by applying some highlighter around your lips to make the colour pop out.

And now that we have followed the steps, lets see my top picks. I have separated this post in two sections; Matte glosses and matte lipsticks, in order to explain the differences between these two.

MATTE GLOSSES

These are applied like any other lipgloss with one small difference; you have to allow some time for them to dry in order to become matte. I prefer the glosses instead of matte lipsticks because they stay on for much longer, however this depends on the shade and the quality. My top picks of matte glosses are:

These are applied smoothly and are available in a number of different shades. What is so exciting about these is their price, as they are very cheap compared to other brands, however some shades need layering in order for the colour to look smooth and pop out; the shades below look fine without too much layering. One other thing to note is that they do not last as long as the MAC ones but for their price they are worth having.

KYLIE Matte Liquid Lipstick

The famous Kylie Jenner matte liquid lipsticks that have become the new craze all over the world are well-known for the fact that as soon as they are applied on the lips, nothing but oil can remove them. Therefore, you are guaranteed with a long lasting colour on your lips and since I own a lip kit myself, I can re-assure you of this. The only issue is that they are so fast-selling, meaning that you have to try very hard in order to get your hands on one of them and they are not available everywhere in the world. Price wise, the lip kits are 29 USD, which is a really good price for both the lipgloss and the lip pencil and the nude, pinky and brownish shades are excellent. Go for a Dolce K like I have, or Posie or Candy K or choose the darker colours. What is great with this collection is that there are so many different shades available while new shades are constantly being introduced.

MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour

My favourite brand when it comes to lipsticks, couldn’t be absent from this post as once more they are one step ahead by producing a varied range of shades of Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours collection, suitable for any taste. Their bold colours are amazing and they stay on forever, something that we all need when going out. I also love the light colours too, as I apply on in the morning before leaving for work and I don’t need to top up my lipstick again. These are more expensive than the previous ones but it is certainly worth owning one of them as you will make a great use out of it.

MATTE LIPSTICKS

For those who are more traditional and feel more comfortable wearing lipsticks than matte glosses then there are numerous choices available. Even though I really like matte glosses and sometimes even prefer them rather than matte lipsticks, there are some shades of lipsticks that can not be found in glosses and some of my favourites are below.

MAC Retro Matte Lipstick

I have to say that I own a number of Retro Matte MAC Lipsticks and I am a very big fan as they are long lasting while most of the shades feel nice on the lips. I said most because sometimes, some shades are a bit too dry so be careful when choosing a Retro Matte lipstick from MAC. What is so good with Retro Matte lipsticks is that there are constantly new colours therefore you can choose according to your skin tone and preferences.

MESAUDA Top Model Matte Lipstick

I just came across these Matte lipsticks recently and was impressed by their price and their excellent quality. My boyfriend who knows how much I like lipsticks, brought me one as a present and as soon as I applied it on my lips I was shocked because they feel as smooth as the glossy ones but they are entirely matte. I started the day and was planning to top up during midday but the lipstick was on until late in the evening, something that surprised me and I ended up in purchasing some more shades as I have never before came across a matte lipstick that feels so soft. I also love the fact that every lipstick has a matching lip pencil which is also very soft and gentle while it lasts all day. I highly recommend you try them.
